A nonprofit organization started last year by Arizona State University students will promote energy-saving and cost-effective construction methods and materials to low-income communities during an event on Saturday.GreenAssist focuses on providing materials such as low energy light bulbs and water-saving fixtures to low-income neighborhoods plagued by dense consumption of electricity and water, said executive director Andrew Krause.“We have issues that affect us globally, yet there is not a lot of incentive to act locally,” said Krause, an ASU junior majoring in housing and community development and construction management.

“Our goal in building this park was to be environmentally-friendly,” said Michelle Roig, president-elect of Anthem Pets.To the naked eye, the park does not appear any more a paragon of environmental consciousness than other parks. However, a closer examination reveals that even the smallest of it details have been designed to avoid interfering the local ecology. The park’s 2 ½ acres were cleared by hand, removing nothing but weeds. Everything in the park is run on solar energy, from an electronic gate opener and water fountains to a lighting system that will be installed next fall or winter. Wooden benches and ramadas are made from timber that was felled by nature, not man. Metal artwork adorning the grounds is fashioned from recycled car parts. The park is even working with a waste management company to set install a system that can recycle dog droppings into methane gas.

It will be called Solana and when completed it will cover 3 square miles and produce 280 megawatts which is enough to provide electricity to 70,000 customers. The plan is to have it in operation by 2011 at a cost of 1 billion dollars. All the electricity produced by the station will be sold to APS. This will be a huge boost for clean energy production in Arizona and hopefully just the begining.
