The Scottsdale-based, German-owned Dial Corp. approached ASU for the partnership in support of ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability, said Jay Golden, director of the National Center of Excellence — a part of the institute.The main goal of the partnership is to try to shift the market by making the public aware of sustainability and by figuring out more ecologically friendly ways of making products, he said.

“Brendan Beardsley, a design graduate student and program research assistant, said companies currently slap words such as “green” or “organic” onto their products’ labels with hope that customers will pay more — regardless of whether the product is really what the consumers expect.
“Education will affect the consumer expectations so that they are more knowledgeable, and companies can’t get away with so much ‘green-washing,’ as it’s now called,” he said.
During the second and third year of the program, the team will focus on “reformulating products to reduce their ecological footprint,” Golden said.”
