I really like the idea of home-brewing our own bio, especially with the obscene fuel prices right now and the unavailability of commercial waste veggie oil (WVO) biodiesel. This looks like a really handy resource, thanks!

Making biofuels from food crops is definitely a concern and a lot of people generally think it's a bad idea. There's quite a bit of debate about if the current food crisis is purely based on energy prices or if biofuels are also playing a role. I'd think they'd have to be because a lot of crop land has been changed from growing food to biofuel crops.
This really isn't a issue with home-brewing biodiesel though. Home-brewers make biofuel from Waste Vegetable Oil which is a waste product of the restaurant industry. This isn't diverting anything from being used as food as it was already used to fry food. Making this into biofuel is a really good use of a waste product.

Hi, I see James on Twitter - I'm a Tucsonan (from NYC) also interested in sustainability here in the West. Anyway, I read an article in Seattle PI about potential for biofuel to divert food sources from the table to the fuel tank...article also mentioned question about how "green" biofuels really are. Thought of your site and wondered about your take on this, from Arizona perspective. The article: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/361634_biodiesel03.html
