Ihave been wondering about these reed diffusers too. My cat got extremely sick, vomiting and diarrohea, bringing up bile as could not eat and I was trying to rack my brains to see what it could be. The vet mentioned Lilies are especially toxic. 5 days on the trot I took him, he nearly died and they had to admit him under emergency as so badly dehydrated. I did wonder about the reed diffuser and put it out in the communal hall (I live in a flat) to try that and the cat slowly recovered. Now however,my other cat this morning has just come over all funny, dribbling, look like he's wet himself and what do you know, I left the 2nd reed diffuser right next to where he had been sitting. Although it is still in the packaging.. It has to be that, doesn't it? These things must be absolutely lethal

Agree - Reed diffusers are BAD! I just bought one and my eyes became extremely irritated. Not to mention, I came home and my poor dogs face and eyes were incredibly swollen. We took her to emergency and seems the reed diffuser scent caused an allergic reaction in her as well!!!!

I'm recovering from a bad run-in with my first (and ladt) reed diffuser. Within an hour of opening it, I developed a sore, irritated throat. The next day, the irritation moved down into my lungs. The symptoms definitely felt sort of cold-like, but after 24 hours, I remembered the diffuser and got it out of the house immediately. The next morning, I had full-blown asthma, and I was coughing up perfume-flavored gunk. My lungs are still pretty irritated, and I am certain that this is not a cold - this same thing happened once before when I opened a cheap candle from Wal Mart and had the same reaction. The first reaction was not as severe as this one.
So, I'm going to stick with good, old-fashioned hippie incense because it has never been irritating and has a lasting scent.
I like my house to smell nice, but as a personal trainer who works out every day, it's just not worth damaging my lungs over.
I'll keep this in mind when I encounter clients with breathing problems and will spread the word to whoever will listen.

Tracy,
Thanks for the info on the reed diffusers. My husband has been getting sick at work for months and just found out yesterday that someone in the next aisle has a reed diffuser, which explains his symptoms. She is taking it home now.

There are many folks like my husband & I who are also allergic to essential oils like eucalyptus & lavender & patchouli
So for those thinking these are safe in the workplace they are not!

Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils
extracted from herbs, trees and plants for therapeutic purposes.
