12 year old girl’s moving speech to the United Nations (16 years ago)

Severn Cullis-Suzuki
I’m only 16 years late posting this story, but I have a good excuse, in 1992 I was 14 years old, probably hadn’t heard of this magical thing called the internet, and the environment was the last thing on my mind. Someone that did have the environment in mind at that time was 12 year old Severn Cullis-Suzuki and she delivered this powerful speech at the UN Earth Summit in 1992.

The speech is very idealistic, but I hope it moved some of the members to start making some positive changes in their countries and the world. Since 1992 we can all probably come up with many positive and negative changes that have happened. The world probably would be a better place if adults behaved in the same way they teach their kids to act.

So where is Severn now? According to this Wikipedia article she graduated from Yale in 2002, hosted a television program called Suzuki’s Nature Quest on the Discovery channel, launched an Internet-based think tank called The Skyfish Project, in 2006 went back to grad school at the University of Victoria, and is still an active environmentalist.

Visit this link for interview of her by The Collage Foundation.

Thanks for posting this. Even 16 years later it is still pertinent and quite moving. Hopefully with the more drastic changes we’ve seen in recent years people will be more willing to hear it and act on it now.

Pleeeeease, not that I have anything against Ms. Suzuki, after all she is not at fault but her father should no better than to bring more people into the world. Over population is our downfall , her Father should be ashamed as he has been proselytizing this message of imminent destrcution of our planet guess what Dave ?? get a vasectomy !!! maybe Ms Suzuki will pledge to get her tubes tied to prevent the planet from imminent destruction, ah well what are you going to do…., blah blah blah

  3. CoolGoose Says:

It’s a very moving speech but do you truly believe that something has changed ?

  4. Alex Says:

I was way too young to see this when the speech was made, so thanks for bringing it to our attention now. Absolutely awesome speech – that girl did a great job. Hopefully today, when things are (unbelievably) even worse than 16 years ago, this speech can persuade our politicians to change how they act and perhaps change what our world is becoming.

  5. John Thomas Says:

Very moving speech however seeing as it was directed to a room full of politicians, it fell on deaf ears!

You don’t mention it, so I will. Severn is also the daughter of Canada’s foremost environmentalist, David Suzuki.

You know, no matter how much people try to stop climate change… no one believes it.

It’s like trying to get people to believe Jesus.

I do, because it’s made clear, and has been proven.

Regardless, there is no way to stop the world at this stage, we are done for.

    Her father teach her well

The UN response: “And how much money do you have saved up for us to consider what you just said?”

  11. Daura Says:

They should be playing this at the parent teacher conferences and waking even more people up to the idea that kids really are thinking about our world and the chaos that is being committed in it daily. Teaching our children before Kindergarten is a necessity to maintaining their world and to show them as parents that we do infact respect their futures here.

  14. Shrug Says:

We have a world of leaders that are invested in war.

Bush’s family has profited hugely from the sale and development of weapons and war related commerce through their ties to the Carlyle Group.

The same goes for all the bankers and other turds that run our world.

Peace is not profitable so wars will continue as long as we let these parasites rule our lives.

Wow! I love the words she used and how she expressed her feelings! She is right how poor people are not being treated well and how animals are being extinct. Kids like me should have a voice like her.

Lovely speech :] I stumbled across this page and I’m glad I did. Even if it was 16 years ago, the speech still has a resounding effect in 2008.

    To nulla:
I don’t know where you grew up, but I was writing speeches with that kind of vocabulary, that kind of sentence structure when I was 10 or 11, as were many of my classmates. If she was passionate enough to fly 5000 miles to Brazil, she’s passionate enough to write a 500 word essay.
